Basic information and History
The Mercedes W113, or "Pagoda" as it is popularly called, is the successor to the iconic 300SL/190SL models and, just like before, was available as both a coupé and a roadster. This is the 3rd "facelift" called the 280SL which was produced between 1967 - 1971 and is also one of the more sought after versions. The car was imported from the USA in 2018 by the seller and has since undergone an unparalleled renovation and is now finished in at least as good, if not better, condition than new. The renovation is incredibly well documented with pictures, receipts, orders, email conversations, etc. and all documentation is included.

Immediately after arrival, the entire car was dismantled at Frits Bernat's Classic Cars and thoroughly examined to see what work was needed. All rusted parts were replaced with brand new original parts and the chassis/body and mechanical parts were sandblasted and surface treated with epoxy paint.

The car, including hardtop, was painted inside and out in the original Mercedes colors Dark Gray Metallic 787 and Metallic Black 831. Not a part was left untreated and all mechanical parts were renovated to new condition and painted in black epoxy after sandblasting. All screws and washers on the entire car were replaced with new ones and all chrome details were refurbished to new condition.

The entire powertrain and interior received the same solid treatment and is today in a condition that can be considered better than new thanks to some well-chosen technical upgrades, these upgrades are described in more detail below. The seller is a true enthusiast who has only had professionals work on the car and has ensured that all have delivered up to his high standard where not a screw has been left untouched.

Condition

Exterior: The car has been driven about 600km after the renovation and is in the same perfect condition as then. As described above, not a single screw has been left untouched and there are no remarks on the exterior. The accompanying hardtop was renovated in conjunction with the rest and the convertible top was also replaced with a new one. The original rims with color-matched hubcaps are unremarkable, the headlights were replaced with factory new ones from Bosch in glass, the windshield is new with green tinting at the top and all chrome parts have been re-chromed. For more info on the exceptionally fine condition see our detailed photos in the album and feel free to ask questions in the comment field!

Interior: As mentioned, the interior also received a complete renovation and update and all replaced parts have been sourced from Mercedes, Brabus, and Hemmels. Much of the leather interior was replaced with new parts, i.a. door sides and the sunroof lid. The rest was restored to mint condition by well-known Colorglo and the only note is a small mark behind the headrest on the driver's side. All-new floor mats were installed in both the interior and trunk with a satin texture for a more exclusive impression. The wood veneer in the dashboard was changed to brand new Zebrano panels from Mercedes, all gauges (including the clock) were sent to VDO in Germany for renovation and adjustment and the lighting for the gauges has been replaced with high-quality LED lights. The car is in incredibly good condition inside and all gauges and functions work without problems. For more info on the exact condition see our detailed photos in the album and feel free to ask questions in the comment field!

Mechanics: The entire engine was taken apart into components and refurbished to new condition with, among other things, a newly balanced crankshaft and rods. As above, the renovation of the engine is well documented and there is a lot of information and pictures of what was done. The fuel injection was refurbished by a specialist workshop in Munich, a new manifold as well as a brand new original muffler was also installed which gives an incredibly nice sound. The rear axle was renovated in Germany and received a brand new lower gear ratio for slightly lower rpm when driving on the highway. A new Mercedes original 5-speed manual gearbox from ZF was also installed and gives a great analog feel to the car but also a nice ride at highway speeds. A professional wheel alignment was done in connection with the change to the brand new "classic" tires with white sidewalls for the best road comfort and safety. The car has driven approx. 600 km since the renovation and according to the seller, is mechanically flawless without any complaints. Inspection exempt and tax-exempt. Please see all the photos in the album for more info!

Summary
The pagoda has become very sought after in recent years and there is a very wide range on the market in terms of both price and level of refurbished examples. This example is for someone looking for "the best of the best" where not a screw has been left untouched, renovated with original Mercedes parts from the best in the business, and which looks just as good in a museum as it would on a road trip on the French Riviera!
