Basic information and history
Domestically sold and well-documented Opel Diplomat Coupé from 1966 with V8 and automatic transmission. At launch, the Opel Diplomat Coupé was a very exclusive hand-built luxury wagon and cost more than the Mercedes-Benz S-Class! The car has only four previous owners. The first owner was an Opel dealer in Stockholm who used the car as a demo vehicle for a year. The car was then sold to the owner of a gas station in Pålsboda. In 1982 the car was sold on to a gentleman from whom the current owner tried to buy the car. Despite requests to buy, the gentleman instead sold the car on to Hudiksvall. The current owner was nagging for 18 years before the previous owner in May 2000 decided to sell the car. The car was then completely dismantled and fully renovated. Current owner continued the renovation for another 12 years and the car has now been inspected, which last happened in 1981! In connection with the renovation and inspection, the odometer was reset.
The coach company Karmann hand-built the Diplomat Coupé in Osnabrück between the years 65 to 67 and only 347 examples were built! This is copy no. 230 and there should be around thirty left in Europe.
- Extremely rare 1966 Opel Diplomat Coupé
- Hand-built by well-known Karmann in only 347 examples
- One of around 30 remaining in Europe
Equipped with a 327cui (5.4-litre) V8 from Corvette, however with extra balancing and blueprinting, fitted with forged crankshaft and pistons, all for a smoother and nicer ride as should be in a proper luxury car. The engine and PowerGlide transmission have been completely renovated and have today run approx. 23000km.
Equipment and options
Equipped with, among other things, powerbrakes and steering, electric window lifts, Blaupunkt Köln original radio and PowerGlide automatic transmission.
Condition
The car is described as being in exquisite condition by the current owner. There are no dents, worse scratches or door knocks on the body. As previously mentioned, the car has undergone a long renovation where, among other things, the front fenders, hood, sills, fender edges, the front, the rear sand plate, spare wheel well and more were replaced. Most of this work is done by professional people at a body shop. The car is of course free of any rust! The paintwork is in top condition with only a minimal stone chip on the front. The car has been 100% sheet metal clean and carefully blasted with a type of soda. This was done on the ENTIRE body, i.e. both outside and inside. Painted under with several layers of epoxy primer and then a 100% waterproof paint that is found on icebreaker ships, among other things. Otherwise, the body spent a year and a half at a paint shop that tinn-welded any unevenness. The car was then painted with several layers and they have taken plenty of time to allow the paint to stand and sink and become completely smooth.
Windscreen is new after renovation. Other windows are original and have light wear from ice scrapers. Chrome, bumpers, emblems, headlights, fog lights, indicator glass and taillights are new after the renovation. The number plate lighting is not original but is not visible. The rims are in excellent condition and the tires have run about 20,000 km.
The interior is in very nice original condition. The right front steel unfortunately has a small burn mark in the leather. The inner ceiling is new in the right material quality and colour. Step in good condition and normal light wear on door sides. Instrument panel in good condition. Steering wheel and most switches are new. The left rear window regulator is out of order. In the existing hole under the instrument panel, an extra button has been fitted for switching the high and low beams.
Engine is described as being in mint condition. Gearbox has been completely renovated. Kickdown stays are missing. There are no noises to speak of. Rear axle has new bearings but can make a faint noise at certain speeds. Nothing abnormal or disturbing. Brakes were refurbished in 2012 with new parts. The brake servo has a small internal leak of vacuum which causes the engine to idle a bit unevenly. Vacuum is therefore disconnected, however without affecting brakes. The inspection had no comments on this. A used servo comes with the car but has not been fitted as the current owner is looking for a factory new one.
Service history
Oil and filter have been changed annually and spark plugs have recently been changed.
Summary
A absolutely fantastic copy of Opel's most expensive car ever! There are only a few of these left and they are extremely highly valued internationally! Take the chance and bring home a truly unique item!
