Basic information and History

The BMW 501, or "Baroque Angels" as they were called by the German people, is a luxury car in true BMW spirit and also the first to be built in Bavaria, as well as the first V8-equipped BMW after the war. A model that breathes luxury, comfort and performance.

This is an early 1954 deluxe bodied example with no front door vents which was rumored to be a losing business for BMW as it was very expensive to produce. A Swedish-sold copy with 4 registered owners, however 3 in the same family that had it ever since 1971 with only one user before. The car was renovated about 10 years ago and still presents itself well and offers the same comfort and luxury as when it was new.

Condition

Exterior: The car is in a very nice restored condition with few remarks considering the age of the car. The car has been rusted over the years and received a full paint job about 10 years ago which has held up very well with only a couple of minor marks and stone chips. Glass parts, chrome and moldings are all in good condition with some patina. There are a pair of modern aluminum rims on them today in good condition, but the original rims are included. For more info on exact condition, see our detailed photos in the album and feel free to ask questions in the comments!

Interior: A very nice and recently renovated interior upholstered in leather and color matching the exterior. Minimal signs of use and in very good condition. The steering wheel is renovated and very nice, but there are small cracks in the plastic on the hub. Dashboard and panels are in very good condition with some patina and traces of age/use on buttons and controls. New interior ceiling and floor mats. No comments on the functions inside except that the interior lighting was not refitted after the renovation but is included if you would like to refit. For more info on exact condition, see our detailed photos in the album and feel free to ask questions in the comments!

Mechanics: The 2.6L V8 engine has been refurbished with new bearings, piston rings and valve guides and runs fine with very little oil smoke. There are no leaks with puddles under the car, but some sweating around gaskets, etc. is there as it should be on an old car like this. Brakes have been checked and are in top condition and the car was inspected in 2019 without any complaints and is now both tax and inspection exempt. The car has been serviced in-house and it comes with a new oil filter for the engine. The read odometer reading is 7736km but is not guaranteed as it has most certainly already been turned over once. For more info on exact condition, see our detailed photos in the album and feel free to ask questions in the comments!

Summary

A classic car that can withstand both use and display in a museum. The model still offers high comfort and fine performance today and is one of the more popular cars of the 50s precisely because it can be used without problems with its high operational reliability.
