Vehicle Information and History

Fully restored 1965 Volvo PV 544 Sport - Imported from the USA

The car was exported to California in 1965 but was registered in the USA as a 1966 model due to its late arrival. After more than 50 years in sunny California, it came back to Sweden in 2019 via Chicago. (A copy of the American registration certificate is included with the car.)

Equipment and Options

In the USA, "America bows" were part of the standard equipment, but in Sweden, these, along with the 5.5-inch wheels and sport exhaust system, were considered sought-after accessories and additional equipment.

Condition

After many decades in a rust-free climate, the car was almost rust-free when restoration began, making the bodywork for the full respray relatively simple. The car was painted in cherry red (color code 46). It is also assessed that all doors, fenders, the hood, and the trunk lid are original and perfectly straight, which must be unique for a car approaching 60 years old! The tinted windshield is new, while the other windows are in good original condition. The chrome and stainless details are complete and in good condition, with the exception of a small dent on one of the side moldings. As mentioned earlier, the new wheels are fitted with new tires with white walls. The entire interior is new and was done in the original color: the seats have been reupholstered, the side panels replaced, and the new headliner is exceptionally well-fitted! (This alone represents a large part of the car’s value.) The instrumentation, controls, and buttons are original and in good condition, except for a slightly dented metal plate and an enlarged radio space for a later model stereo. The engine, which is strong and perfectly vibration-free, is a B 20 that replaced the original B 18 engine. The well-adjusted and refurbished SU carburetors contribute to the engine’s flawless operation. The entire drivetrain, including the clutch, gearbox, rear axle, and driveshaft, operates without any unusual noises. The brakes have been overhauled, with new brake shoes installed during the restoration.

Service History

All oils and filters were naturally changed as part of the full restoration, and the most recent inspection was completed on September 27, 2023.

Summary

A fully restored 1960 Volvo PV Sport with an interesting background after spending over 50 years in the rust-free climate of California. Cherry red, America bows, 5.5-inch wheels, and the classic sound from the sport exhaust system make this example a highly worthy representative of an iconic 1960s car.
