Basic Information & Background
The Mercury Eight is most famous from the hollywood film Rebel without a cause where it was driven by James Dean.
It has become a cult favorite among car buffs and collectors. The model was the most significant new model in the company’s 10-year history. All Mercury body shells were shared with the ‘baby’ Lincoln rather than with Ford as had been the case since 1941. The front-end sheet metal and grille were uniquely Mercury, providing instant model recognition.
This classic example is powered by Ford’s flathead 112 hp V-8, which is shifted via a three-speed column shift manual transmission. Finished in a lovely shade of beige, it is highlighted by whitewall tyres and a matching beige/tan interior. One of 132,082 four-door sports sedans built for 1950, it is as attractive an automobile today as when it rolled off the line in 1950.
Equipment
Most cars were delivered with the same equipment options, but this one has the fantastic 4.3L flathead V8 and manual transmission, a beautiful interior with painted panels and the infamous “suicide doors”. Also equipped with a stylish set of original wheels in matching paint with a contrast red pinstripe and whitewall tires.
Condition
Exterior. The car is in a fantastic unrestored condition with a beautiful paintwork and chrome fittings. The detailed photos barely do it justice. Very few blemishes and remarks.
All 4 rims are in excellent condition
Interior. The interior is also on a fantastic condition looking just as good as it did leaving the factory. Very few signs of usage and very well kept.
Mechanically. The original matching numbers flathead V8 has been well maintained and there are no known issues. It runs and drives like clockwork.
Service history
It has been well maintained over the years and there is some documentation available (see photos), but as you can tell in the photos and behind the wheel its feels just as one would expect in a car in this great condition. Tax and inspection exempt.
Summary
It is difficult to find a good Mercury Eight, but even harder to find one in this great condition and ready to enjoy behind the wheel! These cars will most likely never be cheaper and show a steady increase in valuation. Now is your chance to bid on what is most likely Swedens finest example.
