1961 Ford Thunderbird Convertible
Basic Information and History
Really nice and partially restored 1961 Ford Thunderbird Convertible.
1961 saw the introduction of the third generation Thunderbird, nicknamed the "Bullet Bird". This was in the middle of what later came to be known as The Space Age, where mainly American car manufacturers drew inspiration from the space industry with streamlined designs, wings, and push-buttons reminiscent of a cockpit. Something you see clearly on "Bullet Bird"
This example was sold new in the US, was later imported to Sweden, and has only had 2 previous owners.
The car is sold by a registered car dealer for increased security for a potential buyer and was inspected in 2021 so it is now inspection exempt.
Equipment and Options
Red body with red interior and chrome inserts on the dashboard.
The engine is Ford's classic 390 V8 which brings power to the rear wheels via an automatic gearbox.
In 1961, a new self-tilting steering wheel was introduced for easier acces, as well as a so-called "Floating mirror", a rear-view mirror that was firmly mounted on the windshield so that it looks like it is floating in the air.
Spoke wheels with white-wall tires, "bucket seats", power steering, and power-assisted brakes.
Condition
The car is in overall very good condition, with some minor age-related wear.
Exterior: Since arriving in Sweden, the car has been repainted and the body has been restored. The work was carried out in 2021 and appears very well done and the car is now rust-free. Chrome and glass are in good condition but show minor signs of age. See pictures for more info.
Interior: The interior is original but in very good condition. The seats have some wear and there are some scratches on the instrument panel and panels but it is nothing that interferes with function or overall impression. Electrically, everything works as it should.
Mechanics: The car runs like a clock and the seller notes no remarks on the mechanics.
Summary
A Thunderbird "Bullet Bird" Convertible in the color combination Red over Red could hardly be more iconic of the 60s. With its white-wall tires, chrome spoked wheels, and soft rumble from the 390 V8, this is truly a car to enjoy. Thunderbirds have always had a large following and the 1961 model year is one of the more popular models. This example is in very good condition and presents itself well at exhibitions and meets but at the same time can withstand being used as an enthusiast's car for those who want it.
