1972 Alfa Romeo 2000 GTV
Background and History
This domestically-sold Alfa Romeo 2000 GTV from 1972 has a fascinating history. The previous owner purchased the car as his very first vehicle about 35 years ago, and over the years, it has undergone several transformations – from an original car to a commuter vehicle, and even a track car. Around 15 years ago, he decided to restore the car to a good functional condition. As is often the case with such projects, it escalated and developed into an extensive nuts and bolt restoration that lasted for 15 years, concluding in 2022.
The engine is now a 2.0L Twin Spark. It was thoroughly overhauled during installation and converted to digital ignition but with carbs. Although the engine is relatively original, it now produces around 160 hp. With new camshafts, the power can be easily increased to about 200 hp. Originally, the engine was fuel-injected, but it has now been converted to dual Weber 45 carburetors from Alfaholics. Additionally, the shock absorbers have been upgraded to Yellow Koni with lowering springs for a more responsive and sporty driving experience.

Condition
The car is in fantastic condition, and the body has undergone a complete restoration. It has been professionally repainted, and the front and rear bumpers have been removed, though the original parts are still in good condition with no damage to the chrome. The car has been completely stripped and mounted on a rotisserie during the restoration. This meticulous restoration took 15 years, and during this time, new trim pieces were installed, the car was rust-proofed underneath, and according to the seller, there is no rust. Only minimal imperfections are visible at one wheel arch, and no other damage has been noted. The windshield has a small stone chip about 2 cm and a few minor scratches. The chrome, trim, and headlight glass are in very good condition, and the tires and special-order lightweight wheels from Alfaholics are in like-new condition.
The interior is in very good condition, with completely new mats and door panels from Alfaholics. The seats have been reupholstered by Alfaholics, though the driver’s seat has been replaced with an older, worn sports seat to better match the car's cornering capability and performance. The original driver’s seat is still available but is not reupholstered. A new leather cover from Alfaholics is included but has a crack that needs repair. The dashboard is free of cracks and the buttons show minimal wear. Overall, the entire interior is essentially new. The speedometer shows slightly too high, the original tachometer is disconnected, and the radio is also disconnected since there are no speakers. A digital tachometer is installed but needs adjustment. Heating, lights, windshield wipers, and other functions work as they should.
The engine is optimized and runs perfectly, with new carburetors and adjusted ignition. The gearbox and driveline are in good condition, but there is a typical small oil leak at the gearbox, likely at the crankshaft seal. Some grinding is noticed in first and second gears at low speeds and sloppy shifting, indicating that the clutch might need a slight adjustment to work perfectly. This does not affect driving. The brakes are very good and were serviced in the spring of 2024.
Service History
Professional service performed by Katrineholms Bilteknik. During the winter of 2023/24, the car underwent extensive improvements at a cost of approximately 70,000 SEK, resulting in a vehicle in top condition. Completed work includes:
- Complete oil service for the engine and gearbox
- Adjustment of ignition and carburetors
- Thorough check of the electrical system
- Replacement of all wheel bearings
- Installation of seat belts
- Detailed wheel alignment and optimization of wheel angles for improved handling
The car is now inspection-free and in perfect condition, ready for new adventures.
Summary
The seller, who has owned nearly 100 cars, can undoubtedly say that this car has provided the most joy and appreciation from everyone they meet. With a weight of approximately 850 kg and an engine producing 160 hp, it is already a fast and responsive car with significant potential for anyone looking to take it to the next level.
The handling is phenomenal, and the driving experience is as analog and rewarding as one could wish for. You can choose to drive it just as it is and enjoy every second, or you can install new, more aggressive camshafts and truly give modern sports cars a run for their money.
