1960 Volvo Amazon 121 1.6
Basic information and history
Well known classic sold new in Sweden, Volvo Amazon 121 1.6 from 1960. The car was sold new to an engineer in Västervik and over the years has accumulated 11 owners. How many of these are users versus traders cannot be ascertained. The seller informs that the odometer reads 62,080 km, but has been stationary for 20 years. For a slightly nicer look, lowering springs have been installed. The car gives a good overall impression and long journeys have not presented any problems.
- Classic sold in Sweden, Volvo Amazon 121 from 1960
- B16A replaced by B16B in the 90s
- Good overall impression with various small needs to take care of
The original engine, a B16A of 60 hp, was replaced in the 90s with a B16B of approx. 78 hp. The B16B comes with dual Zenith carburetors versus the B16A with only a single carburetor. You manage the gear changes yourself via a manual 4-speed gearbox.
Condition
The general condition of the bodywork is described as good with a good overall impression. Commendations at exhibitions have been awarded. The seller informs that the shock absorber mounts at the rear are rusty and that the fender edges at the rear have probably been replaced at some point. Front fenders appear to be original sheet metal. At the bottom of the doors there is some rust, as well as some under the car, but nothing serious. Some poor repairs are visible on the driver's side rear door and rear fender edge. However, the overall impression of the paintwork is good. Over 30 years ago, the car was painted in its original colour. This was done after rust repair was done. Unfortunately, the previous owner died while the work was being carried out and therefore it was finished somewhat hastily. The front window has some scratches from the windshield wiper, and appears to be the original window. The rear view mirrors are only clamped in the doors. The chrome is described as "not perfect" and rear reflectors are missing. The Baby Moon rims have some surface rust, but look good. Tire pattern is measured to approx. 4 mm.
The interior is described as being in good condition, except for the back seat and headliner. The back seat is torn and stained. On the front door sides there are some minor glue residues and holes. All rubber strips need to be replaced. Minor cracks are present on the dashboard. The interior ceiling sags and is stained. It comes with a better used inner ceiling, but not checked. Steering wheel, controls and buttons are described as being in OK condition. One low beam does not work, and neither does the clock. Heating element is disconnected and has not been checked. The temp gauge lives a life of its own. An original Volvo tachometer has been installed.
Motors described by the seller go well. The engine got new piston rings, bearings and more replaced in 2002. However, as with most older cars, it should not be left idling for too long as vapor lock can be created and the car becomes difficult to start. The classic solution is, as always, to wait a while and try again, and then it usually starts. The clutch takes a long way down, but if you pump, it takes well. Aeration of the system may be preferable. The brakes work.
Service history
In the fall of 2023, the oil and filter were changed. The car does not draw oil, but when you drive the car, a few deciliters of water comes out of the splash pipe on the radiator. However, it does not run hot and the car has never boiled. There are various extracts of the ownership history from the National Archives. Registration plates with the old registration number are also available, although newly manufactured. It also comes with a lot of workshop manuals printed on paper.
Summary
Perfect Amazon for those who want to be able to drive and enjoy the car, but have various little things to do on the weekdays.
