Basic information and history
The Excalibur was designed by Brooke Stevens for Studebaker. Stevens is a well-known designer and has had great influence in American 50's home and industry. The car's appearance is largely influenced by the Mercedes-Benz SSK from the late 1920s. Stevens started a company to be able to build and market the cars outside of Studebaker. A prototype of the car was shown in 1963 around the United States.
This fantastic Excalibur Phaeton Series III from 1975 was sold new in the states and came to Sweden in 1991. Since then it has only had 2 owners. The first owner's name is on both the dashboard and the doors. He owned the car until his passing. The current owner has owned the car for 16 years and has taken good care of it. It comes with some original accessories such as lead mallet, polish and original hardtop with side windows.
This car also comes with matching numbers and was the first Excalibur to be built on an in-house manufactured chassis. The Series III is the only model that comes with a big block engine, which makes this car even more rare. The engine is a 7.4-liter big block with approx. 215 hp, connected to a 3-speed automatic transmission. The odometer reading is 40.800 km but cannot be guaranteed. The condition and the number of owners speak for a well-cared-for car.
Equipment and options
The car is still decorated with its original paint and convertible, carpets and leather upholstery are also original from the factory. Otherwise more simply equipped with, among other things, a stereo.
Condition
Overall, the car is in a well-maintained condition. Both spare wheel covers have been repainted, otherwise the paint on the car is original from the factory. Small marks and stone chips are to be expected, considering 47 years of use. However, the car is described by the owner as rust free. Chrome, moldings and emblems come without remark. Glass parts are also those without remark. The car's original rims are in good condition.
The interior is in good condition with almost 50-year-old patina adorning the interior. The original leather of the seating is in relatively good condition and has survived well from damage and cracks. Door sides have some stains and marks, but no serious damage. The convertible is from 1975 and is described by the seller as a bit stiff and gloomy. Dashboard and panel in good condition. The steering wheel comes with a patina, as expected given the year.
Both engine and transmission are unopened and unrestored but are described by the current owner as working well. Under the stunning two-piece hood, the big-block looks clean and tidy. Leakage or other things are not noted. Underneath, the car looks relatively nice, but there is surface rust visible on some parts. The current owner reports that everything works fine, both mechanically and electrically.
Feel free to look through all the photos to form your own opinion of the condition. If you have any questions, feel free to ask them directly in the comment section!
Service history
The car has received ongoing maintenance over the years by its current owner. Previous service documentation is available and included with purchase.
Summary
An absolutely stunning four-seater convertible with a look unlike anything else from modern times! The car always causes quite a stir according to the current owner, and you have to be prepared to answer a lot of questions from curious people! In addition to a unique design by today's standards, you also get a rumbling V8 under the long hood.
