Basic Information and History
The Saab 9-7X ARC is an SUV model that was manufactured between 2005 and 2008. It was based on GM’s GMT-360 platform and shared many components with models like the Chevrolet Trailblazer, Buick Rainier, and GMC Envoy. Despite this, the 9-7X underwent significant design changes to reflect Saab’s unique style and driving characteristics, making the car more “Saab” and less “Chevrolet.”
An interesting piece of trivia is that in 2003–2004, a team from Saab’s Swedish design department worked in Detroit to transform the model and its GMT-360 platform into a vehicle with a typical Saab feel. Designed by Lars Falk and a team from Trollhättan, in collaboration with American engineers, they succeeded in creating an SUV that combined American strength with Swedish design.
In Sweden, the Saab 9-7X was sold through import firms. The largest Swedish Saab dealership, Svenska Bil AB, and Klintberg Way imported a small number of vehicles in spring 2007. Exact figures for the number of imported vehicles are not available, but approximately 130 cars were brought in, and as of today, 122 Saab 9-7X vehicles are registered in Sweden.
When it comes to pricing, it varied depending on the model and equipment. According to information from former Saab employees, the recommended price ranged from SEK 339,800 for the six-cylinder engine to SEK 399,800 for the 5.3-liter V8 with 300 hp. Today, it is difficult to find well-maintained examples on the market, and low-mileage units like this one with a V8 are extremely rare.
The Saab 9-7X was offered with three different engine options:
- 4.2-liter inline six-cylinder engine: Originally producing 275 hp, it was increased to 290 hp from the 2006 model year onward.
- 5.3-liter V8 engine: A GM engine with 300 hp.
- 6.0-liter V8 engine: Starting with the 2008 model year, the top-tier Aero model featured a 390 hp V8 engine sourced from the Chevrolet Corvette.
The six-cylinder version was initially called Linear, while the eight-cylinder variant was referred to as ARC. Despite its origins from the Chevrolet Trailblazer, the Saab 9-7X underwent extensive changes to meet Saab’s standards. The result was a much better, more luxurious, and more enjoyable car to drive, featuring European suspension, an upgraded interior, and exterior design that reflected Saab’s aesthetics. This created an SUV with improved driving dynamics and comfort compared to its sibling models. The ignition switch was placed between the seats, and the interior featured classic Saab details like cup holders and air vents.
In summary, the Saab 9-7X ARC is a unique combination of an American SUV platform and Swedish design philosophy, making it an intriguing choice for car enthusiasts seeking an unusual and characterful SUV to collect, drive, and enjoy.
