Although Covid temporarily brought about a bubble of reckless value increases on basically everything old, we have now experienced that bubbles burst and values have returned to more “normal” and the old rules are back in use. Some really special models will remain popular over time and thus retain and increase in value while many, especially older objects of more common models, will lose popularity as new generations of collectors and enthusiasts prefer to look at what was popular during their own childhood. Nostalgia is a strong driving force.
Right now we are seeing strong purchasing power from Gen X (born 65-80) which explains the interest in objects from the 80s-90s, and thus generally reduced interest in older 50s-60s. Although this is natural, I believe there is a way around the problem where younger generations open their eyes to all the fantastic creations that populated our roads further back in time. The answer is that they must be experienced in their right element!
One reason why interest in older cars in the target group is cooling down is that they are simply not driven and therefore no longer seen. There is simply no comparison between the experience of seeing a red little Bertone coupe roaring around a street corner, one wheel in the air and two tempting carburetors struggling to give the little four air and fuel compared to seeing the same creation under a blanket, or on a pedestal in a garage, completely silent and still, but still beautiful. Cars are built to be driven, experienced and heard. Or what!
So, if there is an old rarity at home in the garage, make this promise. Drive it, and treat yourself and those around you to an experience that is no longer offered today. If anything, that will re-vitalize interest.
On the auction side, 2025 has opened strongly and the auctions are already in full swing. Of course with somewhat lower intensity during these first winter months, but December and January have continued to show good activity and nice closings.
