1953 Ford Mainliner Custom

Emelie
Skellefteå

Basic information and history

The Ford Mainliner was produced between 1952 and 1956. It was introduced as the entry-level model for the 1952 model range. The model ceased production in 1957 when the Ford Custom was introduced. The model came in four different body styles, 2- and 4-door sedan, 2-door coupé and station wagon.

This 1953 custom Mainliner Club Coupé comes with a Chevrolet 350 engine from 2016 which currently has barely 50.000 km. In connection with the engine change, the car also received a TH700 box with overdrive and lockup. The car was sold new in the USA and today has had 5 previous owners. The meter reading today stands at approx. 100.000 km, but unfortunately, as usual with classic US-cars, cannot be guaranteed. The person who imported the car bought it in Los Angeles in 2004 when he saw it sitting at a workshop they passed on several occasions. It turned out that the person who owned the car could not afford to redeem it from the workshop and that it had been standing at the shop for 2 years. After a bit of back and forth between the individuals, the car was sold and shipped home to Sweden. The car comes with interesting documentation, including the original receipt from 1953 and instruction manual.

Equipment and options

The car has received both a modernization and customization. There is, among other things, air suspension in the back, overdrive on the transmission, a more modern stereo and disc brakes. The body has been given rounded hood corners, covered door handles and frenched headlights. It comes with custom made unpainted side skirts.

Condition

The condition is described as good used condition by the current owner with the remark that there are small cracks and some stone chips. The car received new paint in 2020. There is some rust on the car, but it has not been so bad that there was a need to weld the car up. There are some bubbles in the paint in places and rust is visible, for example above the rear bumper. Bubbles in the paint may have been moisture on the plate during painting. Current owner advises that the rust spot above the rear bumper is the rust that is definitely present. Glass parts are in good condition, but there is a crack in the glass on the passenger door and a small crack on the windshield. Chrome and moldings have some surface rust and spots in them. The sheet metal rims with their custom caps have a note on the left and right rear and come with approx. 1mm pattern depth.

The nice red interior looks to be in usable condition with no worse wear. It was renovated by previous owners. However, time has left its mark, including minor damage to the right side piece of the front sofa. Instrument panel is described as being in good condition. Instruments and gauges were updated in connection with the engine change.

Mechanically, the car is described as being in very nice condition. The engine is described as being in top condition, and with the modernizations that have been carried out, the car is easy to drive and economical to drive around in. Complete brake system from Volvo including disc brakes is fitted in connection with other updates and is described as being in good condition. The car runs quietly and nicely without a rattle. No leaks have been noted. The car has just been serviced by the current owner. Previous
service records are unfortunately not available. The car was last inspected in 2017.
