1935 Plymouth Hot Rod
Background Information and History
Plymouth Model PJ Deluxe Coupe converted to a Rumble Seat / mother-in-law's seat. The current owner has owned and built the car for 20 years. There is an unknown number of previous owners before the current owner, and the history was missing when they purchased the car in 2003. It has been imported from Norway. The car has been built from the ground up, with everything meticulously gone through. The current owner has build photos and documentation of the entire process. The car was completed and inspected as a modified vehicle in 2021 and has only been driven a few miles since then. It has been modified in a classic hot rod style. The engine compartment has been carefully restored and detailed in a period-appropriate manner, featuring, for example, a fabric-wrapped electrical system and classic accessories from Offenhauser, Mallory, Cal-Custom, Holley, Fenton, and Edelbrock.
The engine is equipped with a classic 6x2 Edelbrock intake with six Ford 94 carburetors. Ignition is managed by a Mallory Flat Cap distributor converted to electronic ignition. The original frame has been boxed and reinforced with a kick-up at the rear. It has an independent front suspension with rack-and-pinion steering and adjustable coilovers both front and rear. Everything is meticulously painted and detailed. The stainless, TIG-welded exhaust system features chrome headers. The Appliance 15” wheels have been refurbished with new chrome and completely new chrome rim bands. The construction was completed in 2021, and most parts are new or refurbished. Thanks to the mother-in-law's seat, the car is approved for three passengers. It is in very good condition.
Condition
The body has been completely renovated, repaired, and rebuilt from being a sheet metal wreck inside and out. It has been sprayed with two-component epoxy primer and painted with a silver metallic base coat, "aluminum," with a satin clear coat. The paint has a white pearl effect and resembles the color of aluminum. All rubber seals, weatherstrips, etc., are new. The rear fenders have been widened by about an inch. The radiator shell has been modified with a custom-built chrome grill. The bumpers have been removed and the holes filled. The headlights are aftermarket custom accessories mounted lower than the originals. The taillights are vintage custom accessories with dark glass. The body has been completely renovated with replaced sheet metal in many areas, including doors, fenders, and footrests. The car has a satin finish and presents a very good overall impression.
As described above, all sheet metal parts have been repainted, including all chassis components and body parts, both inside and outside. Everything in the chassis has been sandblasted, and the body has been protected with epoxy primer. All glass is new with a mild green tint. The windshield has a small crack at the top on the passenger side. The grill and headlight rings have new chrome. Door handles have an older patinated chrome finish. The tires have approximately 20 kilometers of wear, which also applies to the car in its entirety after the complete renovation. Period-appropriate diagonal tires with a white sidewall.
The headliner is new and without damage or defects, made of off-white vinyl. The controls are new. The windshield, which originally opened with a crank, now has electric opening. The steering wheel is a vintage Superior in chrome and off-white vinyl, showing normal signs of age and pitted chrome. The instrumentation consists of six matching vintage Stewart Warner gauges in good condition. The seats have been replaced and come from an unknown 1960s car. The engine is completely rebuilt: a 1967 Chevrolet 327 with a forged crankshaft, connecting rods, and pistons. It has been bored, decked, ground crankshaft, and balanced. The cylinder head is of the World Sportsman 2, angle plug, iron type. It has Comp Cams roller rockers and a Comp Cams Thumpr retrofit hydraulic camshaft. ARP bolts. Vintage Edelbrock 6x2 intake with fully refurbished Ford/Holley 94 carburetors and Fenton fuel block. Cal-Custom valve covers with Offenhauser breathers. The Mallory dual-point distributor has been converted to electronic. The engine is completely rebuilt, and all six carburetors are meticulously configured with a progressive linkage system. The machine work was performed by Birka Motorrenoveringar in Stockholm.
The refurbished and reinforced Ford 9” rear axle has an Auburn differential. The overhauled TH400 three-speed automatic transmission has been upgraded, and all components of the brake system are new. There are ventilated disc brakes at the front and drum brakes at the rear. The car has an electric parking brake and a dual-circuit system with vacuum assist.
Service History
All oils have been changed after a complete overhaul and break-in. The car has been driven approximately 200 kilometers since then. Receipts are available for most purchases, including the engine overhaul and parts used during the renovation. The car was registered and inspected as a modified vehicle with all changes documented on September 10, 2021.
